One area my students struggle the most with is reading and background knowledge. Having little schema myself, I can relate to our students whose life experience leaves them with little to no schema of their state much less the world. I'm requesting a 2nd-grade team set for our students so together we can begin building our students reading skills and knowledge of their world. They may not be able to travel their world physically but through these magazines (Scholastic News), we can finally travel and explore our world through reading. By building their schema, our students will make connections to their reading and build on comprehension as well. When a student gains comprehension we make giant leaps in reading.
