Each year over 30 students walk through the door of my classroom looking for a way to find their voice and let their ideas be heard through the Speech & Debate Team. Some are shy, others are experienced performers, all need the audience and the opportunities competitive speech and debate provide to help them be thoughtful listeners and speakers. My students are learning skills so desperately needed in our time--how to engage in respectful discourse. The black books and plastic inserts empower students to perform their Poetry, Prose, and Program Oral Interpretation pieces and serve as a key to a brighter future. My students have gone on to become state champions and semi-finalists in national tournaments. All of them have been transformed by their experiences as speech and debate competitors.
