Students in one classroom are learning at different levels and speeds, especially after the impact of remote learning due to Covid-19 restrictions. Differentiated learning demands the use of small group and individualized instruction. To increase the enthusiasm and effectiveness of small group instruction, we need better headphones, and, of course, lots of books to read! The headphones received in our sixth-grade class are intended for smaller heads, and my poor students are in pain. Working individually on their Chromebooks during small group time is essential to keeping students engaged productively while other groups are reading. And reading they are doing! They are going through their small group novels quickly, and we are out of choices. Choice makes students much more motivated and enthusiastic. Our school has only been open one year, so we are still acquiring much of the basic supplies needed. Having materials stuck on ships out in quarantines sure doesn't help! I look forward to getting more bookshelves so that we can increase our selection.
