If you think back to your own experience in high school, you can probably recall at least one piece of literature that left an impression on you. Books have the power to transform how we see ourselves, our communities, and the world. Unfortunately, I am in a state where the emphasis on test prep leaves less room in the curriculum for exploring literature, something I hope to change through a daily independent reading program. Students will spend 10 - 20 minutes every day reading a book of their choice. And while research shows that daily reading increases students' vocabulary, comprehension skills, and reading stamina, it also fosters students' love of reading for pleasure. I'm requesting a variety of books including Between the Lines, So Hard to Say, The Coldest Winter Ever, A Deeper Love Inside: The Porsche Santiaga Story, The God Box, Rainbow Road, Running with Lions, 145th Street: Short Stories, and the Breaking the Rules and The Crossover series. With your donation, students will be able to read independently and find a book they really love.
