My wonderful students are all members of a self-contained special education classroom. They have a range of disabilities-- some are non-verbal, some have behavior and/or medical problems. Because of their disabilities, many of my students have a hard time processing sensory input. This means they can become overwhelmed and upset by loud noises, bright lights and unpleasant smells or textures. Allowing these children to explore a variety of sensory items (water, sand, bubbles, goo, etc.) in a comfortable environment can allow them to maintain composure when they are exposed to undesired stimuli throughout their day. Their ability to maintain composure will help them throughout their lives!
