My school is a Title I school with a high percentage of free and reduced lunch students. As a result of Hurricane Katrina, Hancock County School District lost two elementary schools but grew in population with the relocation of coastal families. The district and the community is in the process of still rebuilding. Hancock County has a student population of about 4000 students. We have had three straight years of budget cuts. This year the State of Mississippi cut our school system budget by a little over two and one-half million dollars. Due to these cuts, the county lost 16 teachers, 3 counselors, and one assistant principal. There were also severe cuts in classroom spending. For this reason, funding is very restricted. I have students who are devoted to the band program and strive for excellence in all that they do. Last year the school had two National Merit Finalists, and both were in the band program. This year I have one. My students are exceptional. I am very lucky!
