As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I work with 70+ students from Kindergarten to 8th grade multiple times each week, including 6 special day classes. They come from a wide variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Some students need help with learning how to correctly say speech sounds (articulation) or have apraxia. Other students are dysfluent (stutter). Many students have difficulty following teacher directions, learning grammar and syntax or understanding classroom vocabulary. Some students have Autism, Downs Syndrome, learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, an emotional disturbance or other medical needs. Others are nonverbal and need a communication system so they can speak. Despite the challenges my students face, I strive to make speech a place where they feel safe and get the support they need to succeed.
