My students need authentic literature in English and Spanish, that is at their level, so that they can practice reading in class and at home. With practice, students can grow a love of reading that will continue on in their lives. In a dual-immersion classroom, this is especially important, because students are being taught to read in their native language and another language. This means they need more practice, but it also means that both languages need to present and accessible in the classroom, which is where more Spanish books, including the Authentic Spanish Language Collection and La casa del arbol (Magic Tree House) come into play. Many of my students have grown up in poverty, and many of the families I work with do not have the means to buy books for their children. It is even less common that they will have literature in Spanish, because even as a teacher it has been difficult to find- and usually more expensive. This is the first year my school is offering third grade in the dual program (since the program started just 3 years ago), and we are still growing our bilingual materials and supplies. My students are pioneers in the program and are still developing their bilingual skills. As my students continue to learn a second language, their biliteracy will help them in many aspects of their life, and reading engaging, authentic texts will help them develop their literacy and love of reading in both Spanish and English.
