Currently, I am able to offer instruction in coding and robotics using WeDo 2.0 kits during my weekly library media time (a 30-45 minute block/class) for grades 3-5 for a 6-week period sometime during the school year. Because I don't have enough WeDo 2.0 kits for an entire class, I have half the class doing a different coding activity on the computers while the other half uses the kits. Then we switch roles for the next couple of weeks. The short turnaround time really limits how far the students can get in their building and learning. Having enough kits for an entire class to use at the same time would double their hands-on learning time. A major benefit of using these kits over a pre-made robot is that because the students have to build the robot first, they are better able to understand the physics behind the design and how their robot moves! Once students master the basics of robot construction by working through the activities in the kit, they can try out their own designs. Both the building and programming of the robot runs students through the iterative design process-build a prototype (robot or program), test it, tweak it, test the new version, and repeat until there is success. Higher order thinking, for sure! This whole unit also helps to develop patience, perseverance, creativity, cooperation, and problem-solving while meeting elementary computer science standards. With a full class set of WeDo 2.0 Kits, classroom teachers would also be able to utilize the many lesson ideas provided by Lego Education to help meet their science and engineering standards with hands-on, mind-on activities!
