Some people might be shocked to see a second grade teacher asking for ukuleles. Well, I stand before you, a first year teacher, knees buckling and heart pounding, hoping I can somehow make a connection with 20 tiny seven year olds. Turns out, that impossible connection was made instantly through music. I just happen to know how to play the ukulele, and I have always loved music. So, I thought it would be a great ice breaker to share that with them at the beginning of the school year! Little did I know the impact it would have on the kids and how quickly that would become my “thing” “Ms. Beam? Isn’t she the one that has that little guitar?” After realizing it was a great bridge for these kids to get engaged, I ran with it. This isn’t just another boring recorder lesson. The ukulele is an exciting, fun, easy to play instrument that happens to be the perfect size for tiny, little learning hands! I personally own three ukuleles, two of which I bought with my own money specifically for the classroom. This turned out to be a great investment, but has so much more potential. I have so far only used these two ukes to foster those students which seemed to truly already have a gift or passion for music, or anyone who showed interest in learning more. During free time, they might come over to my teacher table and we work on our chords. Songs are a great way to practice multiplication facts at the end of the year, every single week with spelling words and song games. The possibilities are endless, and so is my imagination for learning. I can’t wait to see what these students do to impress me and teach me every day.
