I teach Conceptual Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, and Advanced Placement Chemistry to enthusiastic 9th - 12th graders in a rural high school in downstate Illinois. Students come to my room eager to explore and engage in the learning activities. They are social creatures that thrive when challenged to work together to solve complex problems. In a traditional high school setting these students used to spend much of the day sitting in student desks, facing the front of the classroom, receiving information from their teacher. Today, these students have information at their fingertips and no longer rely on the teacher as the sole source of information. They are eager to access, share, and communicate this information in a new learning environment that allows the teacher to be a facilitator of learning instead of the keeper of information.
