As a speech therapist, I work with children all the way from age 3 to 14. My guiding belief is that all children deserve the right to communicate and be listened to. Let me tell you about three of my students. (Names have been changed) Simon is a three year old who has a vocabulary of about three words but often babbles in an attempt to communicate. If he is unable to share his message that he is hungry, hurts, or is sad, he becomes so frustrated he may melt down for the rest of the day. Mary is a 5th grader with high-functioning autism. She is very verbal and participates in the general education classroom. However, it’s hard for her to understand emotions and fit in with other children. John is a 7th grader who can read but does not speak spontaneously with more than one word. He is having trouble participating in his reading group because he can’t answer the teacher’s questions or ask his own.
