My students need over 20 fiction books written by women of color, such as Girl Mans Up, Who Fears Death and The Education of Margot Sanchez, so that they are authentically represented in diverse and authentic stories. As a small neighborhood charter school, we do not have a school library. Our students read a lot, however, the books they have access to are extremely limited. Our classroom library is filled with donations from parents and community members, as well as whatever books we can bring in to share. Many of our students love to read and love to read science fiction, however, they do not ever get to see themselves as characters or authors. Science fiction is a genre that historically has not highlighted diverse authors. Middle school students need access to diverse authors and characters in all literature, especially in the Science Fiction genre. We want to expand the exposure of our students so that they are reading science fiction books written by women and more specifically women of color so that the authors more authentically match the students who are reading. We all know that students who read live more successful lives. When students see themselves authentically represented in the books they read, and the authors who write them, they will believe that they can achieve anything - that their potential is limitless. That is the purpose of this project.
