In second grade, students learn mathematics content that will help them solve real-life problems. This includes working with time and money, understanding place value, and solving problems with addition and subtraction. They learn foundational and practical mathematics skills that are useful for the rest of their lives. As a teacher, it is important to me that I provide my students with the resources they need so they are confident in their ability to solve problems and are able to become masters of mathematics.
Manipulatives make math engaging and come to life! It is essential to have tools such as counters, base 10 blocks, and linking cubes readily available to students of second grade. These tools allow them to visualize the mathematics content they are learning and gain a deeper and conceptual understanding of the material being taught. Mathematically proficient students know about the tools available for their use when solving math problems and make effective use of these tools when solving problems to better their understanding of concepts.
Currently, I do not have enough counters, base 10 blocks, linking cubes, and manipulative money to provide each student with the amount they need to complete problems in class. Having a sufficient amount of supplies is important to ensure that my students and I are able to fully focus on the content being taught and not whether we have enough supplies for everyone. By donating to our project, you will help positively impact their interest in math and increase their overall academic achievement. Thank you!
