I am a special education high school teacher. My students face many challenges on a daily basis. The need for my students to release their excess energy can become challenging when trying to create a productive learning environment that works for each student. They often hear "Chair down," as a reminder for them to keep their chairs on the floor; they often try rocking in them. When they are not leaning in their chairs, they are bouncing their legs which inadvertently shakes the entire table. The constant vibrating of the table makes it very difficult to read or write. Once they have gotten legs to stop moving, they typically start clicking their pens. They have the urgent need to release any additional energy regardless of what task needs to be completed. The majority of the time, they do not realize they are even moving; however, it is very distracting to the others around them that are trying to work.
