Each year, as part of the essential standards in music, my 4th and 5th graders learn about the musical history of our state, North Carolina, and our country. Music from the southeast has greatly impacted the music of our entire nation and I am always excited to share that history with my students. We sing, play and dance folk songs and spirituals from our region's past and learn how that important music transformed into the music we hear today. Dulcimers would allow my students to experience the music of the Appalachian Mountains with their own two hands. Playing the dulcimer will bring history to life for my students and be an experience they will not soon forget.
