My students wanted to know how decimals correlate in their daily lives outside of money. They are always begging to get outside into the beautiful weather instead of sitting inside the classroom. I was inspired one sunny day to take my students outside to run a race. We only had one working stop watch, but they were able to record all of their data by racing two at a time. They later organized everyone's race times to the nearest hundredth from least to greatest. Through discussion, my students generously determined that the next group of students needed to have more competitions. They loved the race and brainstormed that jump rope and hula hoop competitions would also be great competitions to time. They wanted other students to have more experience gathering and organizing multiple sets of data. This project would combine math standards with science standards. Science standards would cover the importance of physical fitness.
