Mexico, Syria, Nepal. These are more than just countries to name. They are the places where my students come from. The vast majority of my students are immigrants and refugees from various countries. Often times they are looked at and treated like "others" because English is a second language for a lot of them. However, this is just one barrier that they overcome. My school is located in a high poverty neighborhood, in which the parents are a part of the working class. As a result of the high poverty rate, 100% of my students are on free and reduced-price lunch. In spite of the barriers that they face, my learners continue to grow and develop. My classroom is a fun, loving, and safe environment in which creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication are celebrated and encouraged. Learners take charge of their own learning, and teach each other. In my classroom, we are a FAMILY.
