This school is located in a rural area where there is a large diverse group of students. We have a Deaf/Hard of Hearing program within our school and most of the student's attend mainstreamed classrooms with interpreters. The students (hearing and deaf)see interpreters daily and are taught ASL twice a week. ASL course started last year, for our elementary students, so they are able to communicate with their peers confidently and effectively. The students are not only able to learn signs but will learn about, observe, and examine the history of ASL and the culture of its native users. Students will learn an understanding and appreciation of the diversity of languages and cultures, including one's own which can help students function as responsible, informed, and confident citizens. Learning another language has been shown to enhance students' performance in other academic areas as well! It is important for ALL students to feel included and that is exactly our goal for this course.
