In elementary art, visuals are needed from many different resources. Storytelling captures attention and is memorable when narrated with humor and excitement. It facilitates discussion and creates opportunities for children to make connections in life and with curriculum being taught in their regular classes. The students learn about artists, different styles of art, and also use books based on their own varying interests. A lot of books are needed because of the 6 levels of age that are taught. K-2 are interested in different books than 3rd-5th and each age group has differing levels of skill. This year, my goal is to incorporate Teaching for Artistic Behavior which will require books on differing interests (such as: sketching, fiber art, sculpture, paper art, printmaking, etc). I hope to foster a classroom studio that fills young creators with a desire to investigate art on their own while scaffolding research, planning, and presentation methods.
