I work at a Title 1 public school in Washington, DC. Some of my students were born in the district, while others come from as far away as El Salvador. Most students come from low-income households, and for many, English is their second language. They are intelligent, funny, and resilient. My students have overcome many challenges including poverty, abuse, homelessness, teenage pregnancy and weak or nonexistent support systems at home.
