Dominican Republic, Ghana, Bengal, Bangkok--these are some of the places our students' families are from. Many have gone through great hardship to provide a better future for these children. The great experiment in democracy that is urban education is alive and thriving. Our school was built as a school for the blind almost 100 years ago. It has some charm, but is hardly suited for 21st century needs. Chalkboards have been replaced with whiteboards (usable as a screen), and a classroom next to a sink is now the art room. Our students have to be creative because they have so little. Most of our parents struggle to keep their children fed and clothed, never mind stimulated and engaged in the world around them. Still, the children don't know they are poor--most have loving families and are cherished dearly. They have a lot of love to give!
