Painting is a wonderful brain exercise for students. Studies show that painting enhances cognition in multiple ways as well as cultivates emotional growth. My Art classroom is for the majority of my students the only close experience with art and painting. The population at our school is composed of mostly at-risk students, many in financial need and with very difficult and stressful lives. My classroom is the space where they can express themselves thru art leaving their problems and restrictions aside, a space where they can release stress, create problem-solving skills, and build self-esteem. My classroom serves 30 groups of students ranging from Pk to 5th grade (an average of 500 students) and it is heartbreaking to restrict students from painting because there is no more drying space/floor space for them to place their masterpieces to dry. Please help my students to continue practicing art and enjoying all the benefits of painting.
