My new position as the art teacher is an opportunity to develop a whole new art program. To start, I really need to be set up for success so my students can not only learn and create art, but also see how a high-quality art department is designed. The storage unit and cart will allow for items to begin to be organized and give the classroom a sense of order and artistic pride. Making art in chaos is possible, but I want to transform this room into a model for all classrooms. The students need to see that art is just as valuable as any other core class. How will they believe this with a visual disaster and lack of supplies that promote structure and organization? My request for a large for paper cutter also shows how, through smaller slices at a time, we can make art of all sizes and not be limited to thinking small. A paper trimmer will allow for nice clean edges to once again promote the idea of a crisp, new environment. This tool would allow for me to cut paper for 2D art, matboard to give a high-class look for student artwork on display, slice cardboard for projects using recycled materials, cut photos and cardstock accurately for a new scrapbooking opportunity, etc. The paper cutter will be stored in a space where younger students cannot put themselves in danger and will be monitored constantly for safety. Students will also see that as they grow older they can take on more ownership as the older kids (middle school) will receive training on how to safely use this device.
