I have the most wonderful group of first grade students. They are kind, loving, and hardworking. This high needs group of children are part of a reduced-size classroom. This means they were specifically chosen to be in our classroom, as they were the lowest first graders in the building. 100% of them were below to severely below grade level in reading at the beginning of the year. Now, less than 50% of them are behind, with about 25% being above grade level in reading, and another 25% of them ALMOST at grade level! We are located in a high poverty area, where single parents work any available shift to try to make ends me. This leaves little time for academic support at home.
