In my classroom, we practice reading, writing, listening and speaking daily using cooperative learning strategies.
Every day, my students participate in guided reading centers where they develop skills and strategies to help them with comprehension, decoding, and word work. The addition of technology like the listening center will provide many of my students (who are English Language Learners) with extra practice in the areas of listening and speaking. At the listening center, my students will be able to listen to and read along with texts to enhance comprehension.
All of my students would greatly benefit from a phonics building center. They can actively participate in engaging activities that will allow them to develop skills they can use across content areas throughout first grade. My students also need dry erase boards to help them during word work activities. On the dry erase boards my students will be able to practice writing sight words and using them in sentences. The dry erase boards can also be used in mathematics for small group activities where students complete task cards for various skills.
