My students are enthusiastic learners who are eager to gain all the knowledge they can from every opportunity. They are a 1st grade class who loves to read and knows how to appreciate books when they match their levels. This week I started teaching them the three ways to read a book, how to work on their reading stamina, and how to choose a book that is a "good fit". These students are so eager to get their hands on books. I notice something as a teacher that made my heart sink. As my first grade students jumped up and excitedly ran to the classroom library, their faces included some confusion. This confusion was not because of their knowledge of how to find a book that fits, it was because I had very few books that would actually fit their reading levels. You must understand that I have spent five years teaching upper grade levels, and I was just moved to first grade this year. None of my books would fit their needs. So, I just encouraged them to do their best and hoped this will change.
