My students come from a wide range of cultural and economic backgrounds. In our area, there is a high concentration of refugees and there is high poverty. It is not unusual for students to work and make money to help pay the bills at their household. It is also not unusual for students to fall behind in school due to language barriers (there are 37 languages spoken in our district). Something amazing happens in an art classroom. Art is a universal language. Students bond over their work. They learn to build relationships with their peers regardless of their background. These students learn to respect each other and the work produced. Many times these students learn for the first time, that they are good at something, and they begin developing a work ethic and a sense of pride at something they have accomplished.
