The high school self-contained classroom I teach in provides students the opportunity to develop and build life skills while incorporating basic academic skills. We are beginning to build a sensory room since many of my students have sensory and behavioral needs. In developing this room to support student needs we have found there are numerous pieces of equipment all students would greatly benefit from but due to funding are unable to purchase. In hopes of providing my students with a well rounded education during the 4 years I have them in addition to providing them with an academic education I would like to see them make progress in terms of their behavior, tolerance and overall language. Many students have minimal communication skills and therefore express their needs in unconventional ways. With the appropriate tools and support I will show them how to communicate effectively and ultimately enhance their life.
