Why Flexible Seating? How to meet kids where they are at with choice Students arrive to kindergarten with varying degrees of schooling experience. In order to meet students where they are at within the classroom, educators must think about more than just the content that is being taught. The learning environment has a large impact on the overall success in the classroom. Many adults have the flexible seating option within their own workspace. Standing desks, lounge chairs, or coffee shops are just a few examples of how we, as adults, create an environment that works for our own personal style. Traditional classrooms have focused on the table and chair seating option. This leaves little else available to students who perform better in less traditional settings. Through flexible seating, students are provided choices in how they approach their own learning each day. Choice gives students the opportunity to feel empowered with their own learning and helps facilitate positive decision making. With the variety of seating opportunities within the classroom, students are able to move their bodies more than in a traditional setting. With chairs that wobble, rugs that allow for laying, and lap tables for work spaces, students are burning more energy and able to attend to lessons for greater lengths. Communities within classroom environments are established through student voices and collaboration. With a variety of seating options, students are able to work with other students who enjoy learning in a similar way. Lastly, flexible seating is fun! Students approach each day with an opportunity to work with new students and learn in a different way. With the variety of options, students become excited about their learning and engagement in the classroom each day.
