My students are inner-city English Language Learners in grades 5-6. They are one, two, or even three years behind grade level in reading. My fellow teachers and I have been working hard to help them, and each year they make great gains. However, catching up to grade level requires that they make more than a year's worth of growth in one academic year. This means that they need to be reading a TON! Unfortunately, reading is a chore for many of them because they have struggled with it throughout their lives.
