My school is a Title 1 school. The entire district receives free lunch. 25-30% of our students require Special Education services. Our teen pregnancy rate is 05%. Many of our students come to us each day bringing many challenging situations with them. However, it seems that when they enter culinary arts, and it is a LAB day (which means we are cooking) somehow their day just got a little better. In the 17 years that I have been teaching at CHS our culinary arts program has grown a lot. Even though more culinary classes keep being added and the number of students per class is approximately 30 students each, our budget for groceries has remained the same (if not gotten smaller) since 1998. Students who plan to go to culinary school after high school and those who wish to work in a restaurant will not be fully prepared if we can't continue to teach students with hands-on lab classes. My students need to be cooking.
