I teach English language learners in a high poverty location. Our school recently qualified for free lunch and breakfast for all students due to the high poverty level in our area. My students come from homes where the English language is not spoken or heard. They are so eager to learn, however, with limited English proficiency, my students really struggle in the mainstream classroom. It appears that their struggles often cause them to stay quiet in the mainstream classroom. When they come into my room, they are in a small group where they are able to relate to one another as they are all learning a second language. My students come into my room ready to come out of their shell! They love their time together as it really gives them an opportunity to use the English language and learn academic language that will help them succeed in the mainstream classroom. They are engaged the entire time and they always look forward to our time together.
