Alphabet awareness is the precursor to literacy acquisition. Young children need multiple opportunities to develop letter recognition, phonological awareness and writing skills, in order for them to reach this outcome. Incorporating literacy tools in various learning areas, such as Sand & Water, Art, Writing, provides the opportunity to engage learners in intentional activities that foster literacy and language development. Some exciting literacy activities our students enjoy in the Sand and Water area are, "Fishing Trip" where we fish for numbers using magnetic letters and rods or "Buried Treasure" where we dig up letters buried in the sand. I plan to take the learning activities into the Sand and Water area to expand upon the children’s literary experiences. The students also enjoy writing using letter stamps and ink pads, and writing their names with letter stamps/pads would also promote literacy.
