Many of our students have struggled to connect with school. There are reading skill gaps that must be addressed. We have successfully created an active learning environment where their needs and motivations are turning around. But now we are connecting only virtually. I believe this feeling of disconnection can be addressed in part by allowing my students to own something significant that represents their learning. They can hold it, mark it with reading strategies, and refer to it to connect with one another. "Dear Martin" is an engaging story, with which my students will identify in many ways. The story also leans toward understanding a difficult situation by processing the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
