A strong classroom community has the power to ignite a passion for lifelong learning in a student. This sense of belonging in a community and the responsibilities that come with it, can not be gained by my first graders without daily practice. In order to grapple with the daily, individual and collective, work of building community, my first graders need an organized carpet where our rituals will take place. These rituals will include community circles in the morning where poems, singing, mental math, songs, movement, and sharing will be used to connect us to ourselves, one another, and our shared space. We will again use the carpet for our main lesson of the day. This main lesson will include oral story telling and drama in order to ground our learning in the heart of students and in turn, make learning more meaningful. My littles would again use this carpet as their "just right spot" during reading and writing workshops while they work on their stamina by working independently. We would use the space of the carpet during math workshops as we work on kinesthetic and visual ways to solve math problems. Lastly, at the end of every day, we will end our afternoon together in a closing circle where appreciations and classroom meetings will take place. With your help, our classroom will be able to do the work of building community without being distracted by the logistics of where everyone is sitting.
