Everyone learns differently and in different positions. Some students prefer to stand, sit on the floor, rock or sit on a ball while they are learning. Flexible seating will give my students the ability to learn at their full potential because they will be comfortable in the classroom. Students feel empowered when they can make choices about their education. In my classroom, I hope to give students control of the learning environment that makes them feel at their best learning ability. Flexibile seating will also benefit my students with more collaborative learning. One of the items I would like funded is a small couch for two students. This seating setting will be a perfect opportunity for students to share ideas, partner read and work on group projects. I would also like to raise the height of my tables with the help of bed raisers. Getting students out of chairs and on their feet will help stimulate brain activity and increase learning. I would like to replace standard classroom chairs with stability balls and wobble stools. When students sit on these, both sides of their brains are engaged in keeping their bodies centered. A stimulated brain is more focused on learning. Floor seats, rocker chairs and bean bag chairs will be available for students to use during reading time. In my classroom, we have sustained independent reading for 30 minutes each day. Imagine students being able to "curl up" with a good book and becoming immersed in the story. They will be able to concentrate and learn new vocabulary. Lastly, having a variety of seat options will be more fun. Sitting on a new type of seat or in a different area of the classroom every day will encourage my students to socialize with classmates and make new friends.
