I teach at an elementary school in a Midwestern college town. I teach Language arts to 77 5th grade students. I'm also the coordinator of the before and after school tutoring program. This program serves our at-risk students in grades 3- 6. Each year we analyze our district and state test data to identify these students who could be considered at-risk. Once they have been identified we then try to identify possible causes for them being at-risk. One common cause that shows up is lack of motivation. Students who struggle at reading, read much less often than higher achieving students. They need something to motivate them to work harder and continue on. Technology is a big part of our student's lives. When they have free time they tend to be drawn to electronic items. This is what motivates them!
