One of the most difficult things for students to grasp in a science classroom is, "How will this apply to me?" The magnetic fingerprint kits will engage my students by allowing them to process latent (invisible) fingerprints from a "crime scene." The forensics kits will allow them to study everything from DNA to blood types to actually performing their own gel electrophoresis!!!! They will be able to actually perform things that they've only seen on television. Being able to actually experience hands-on science will bring our forensics class to life. Some of my students have never thought of themselves as scientists, but if they're able to learn with real-world tools in a real-world environment, they will excel and gain confidence in the realization that they can be an integral part of STEM based world.
