When many people think of Compton, they think of the gang violence, neglect, and hardship. My students break the stigmas of Compton and prove to be youth who are resilient and strong. They are critical thinkers and advocates for their communities. Centennial High School is in Compton Unified School District. We are a Title 1 school, where the majority of our students are on free-reduced lunch plans. They show much dedication to their education by simply showing up. For them, coming to school means long bus rides, waking up their hardworking parents, or facing long hours of school after having not many hours of sleep. The school currently in a state of turning around and uplifting our youth to pursue creativity and excellence. In our class, we explore literature, national identity, personal becoming, and community activism. We find our best selves so that we can harness our passions to serve the greater good.
