My prekindergarten students learn concepts and relationship skills best through hands-on interactive play with their peers! The recent pandemic has hampered our youngest learners' social experiences that are the basis for their social and emotional education by isolating them from other children their age. We are so excited to be back in our classrooms and want to maximize the time we have together by adding new center activities that will cultivate healthy children and relationships. This project will add quality dramatic play materials to our center times every school day so that early learners can safely engage in crucial social and emotional experiences with each other! Our prekindergarten class uses small group centers or stations three to four times daily for children to explore and apply concepts independent of excessive adult input. This playtime between peers teaches cooperation, sharing, self-discipline, confidence, and imagination just to name a few skills. Covid-19 protocols, especially social distancing, have made social play challenging for early childhood classrooms and these resources will allow our students additional areas to spread out during these times of the day. Adding four new centers we do not already have like a dollhouse to mimic family living, science materials to extend light table play, and flannels for story retelling will allow us to keep our center sizes much smaller. We want our kids to have meaningful experiences during their school day while remaining healthy. At the same time, adding these academic-rich activities will contribute to student learning and growth! This project is a win-win for students, teachers, and families who are ready to get back to learning to play together again!
