Special education has come a long way from the dark outbuildings of the past, however, SPED curriculum and supplies are often an afterthought for many schools. We can do better. There are so many amazing tools that will engage our kiddos and help those who are struggling. Even students who have a hard time in a single subject are serviced by special education. Many special education students at our school are currently struggling with phonemic awareness. This impacts the learning environment because students must understand phonemic principles in order to progress to reading independently. The current pandemic has necessitated limiting the use of physical/shared tools. This additionally impacts the learning environment because special education students are often unable to fully comprehend academic material without manipulatives that help to support the way their brains process information.
