As a school counselor, I work each day to provide needed academic, career, and social/emotional support to each of the more than 160 students in my school through school-wide programs, classroom lessons, support groups, and individual counseling. Age-appropriate books help me to reach students on their level, and can make it possible to discuss very difficult topics in a non-threatening way. Books can be used one-on-one, in small groups, and in the classroom. Having these books in my library will allow me to build classroom lessons and group activities designed to meet the needs of my students. Books like "Testing Miss Malarkey" can be used to help students experiencing test anxiety, while "I Said No!" addresses the topic of "good touch/bad touch" and teaches elementary school children the importance of keeping private areas private and telling an adult if they experience a "bad touch". The books on my wish list cover a broad range of topics from the above-mentioned test anxiety and good touch/bad touch, to death of a pet and incarceration of a parent. A well-stocked bookshelf in the school counseling office puts a variety of tools in my toolbox that I can use to help my students each day.
