Our school's early college initiative has enabled my students to work toward obtaining both a high school diploma and an Associate’s degree upon graduation. Given our demographic, this opportunity has made earning a Bachelor’s degree an obtainable and financially-realistic goal. However, our students lack consistent computer and internet access at home, so our campus serves as one of the only places in our community where students can practice crucial computer skills for college or their future careers. Due to the importance of standardized tests, teachers frequently compete with one another and the administration to reserve computers for our students to practice testing online because of the many language supports the system offers our campus' 51% English Language Learner population. With only four computer labs and two iPad carts readily available to serve our 1,800 students, and language and poverty serving as powerful barriers to our students' academic success, basic computer skills like typing, emailing, conducting research, or creating and utilizing Microsoft Office or Google applications are incredibly underdeveloped and not prioritized. In the digital age, it is becoming increasingly important for students to not only be competent about computers, but to demonstrate creativity and promise for the advancement of technology across all sectors. Through the purchase of five Chrome books, I will have laptops readily available in my classroom to ensure my students have daily access to developing college- and career-ready computer skills that are vital for their future success. By incorporating technology regularly into my instruction, my students will have the opportunity to enhance their learning of daily lesson objectives in addition to practicing coding, building websites, graphic design and research that will make them competitive applicants for college or future careers.
