My high school is set in a rural area with many of the students participating in agriculture and farming. There is a high poverty rate in the area, which makes building a library extremely important for the students. I want to be able to offer a variety of reading materials at school because most students in the area are unable to purchase books on their own. There is a lack of diversity within the student population, so exposing the students to literature of different cultures can provide a connection to the global population. Also, due to students becoming so inundated with social media, they rarely experience or gain the skills needed to read lengthy, rich literature. Providing a plethora of strong literature for the students to explore will give students a broader world view to encourage higher level thinking.
