I have put my heart and soul into adding relevant reading to the curriculum for the past 3 year. My efforts have paid off and I got to add American Born Chinese to our reading this year for the 11th graders at my high school. Students want stories they can relate to and see themselves in. I studied American Born Chinese in college for one of my English classes and fell in love. It is hilarious, heartbreaking, and incredibly relevant in today's times, especially with ongoing discussions about what it means to be Asian America in the United States today. These kids yearn to just hold something tangible in their hands. Being online all last year and partially the year before, I know it would mean the world to them and give them some sense of normal to have a class set we could share and read together!
