I have 170 students from 6th grade to 8th grade. We are a collaborative learning school which is focused on student directed learning. We are a diverse middle school with an equal population both in ethnicity and gender. Many students struggle to sit still throughout the course of a school day without tapping, banging, or drawing on the desks. Many of my students are English language learners, with a mix of on level and pre-ap students. I also teach the AVID elective which is a mix of students from all levels both academically and socially. The AVID elective teaches not only college readiness skills, but organization, tutorial skills, note taking skills, and leadership skills. This elective also teaches the importance of team work, goal setting and success. Many times these kids come from families who have no higher education background. This allows these students to focus on a college education as an attainable goal.
