In order to support my students' social-emotional development, I want to transform my classroom into a trauma-sensitive space by incorporating a "Zen Zone". This safe area will allow students to decompress and participate in activities promoting mindfulness when they are overwhelmed by their emotions. Even upper elementary students need guidance in self-regulation. Elementary students are faced with challenges in their lives and they do not always know how to appropriately respond to such instances. I want to support my students by providing them with the necessary tools to self-regulate their emotions in a healthy and responsible way. The wobble chairs allow for students to move in place while balancing to promote increased focus and engagement, as well as exert excess energy. The singing bowl emits tranquil music to promote mindfulness. The wiggle cushions promote stability, as well as provide diverse sensory input to accommodate for individual student needs. The therapy putty, sensory fidgets, and puzzles allow for students to take a purposeful break and use appropriate tools to help them self-regulate their emotions in order to regroup with the class. The fidget bands allow for students to exert excess energy by moving their feet while participating in desk work.
