I am implementing Readers' Workshop for the second time this year. During this time, we sit as a whole class for a mini-lesson discussing reading strategies, and the students learn how to read books at their individual reading levels. After the 10-minute mini-lesson, students are required to choose a spot to sit and read independently for at least 30 minutes. As you can suspect, this is a routine and goal that takes some time to master in kindergarten, but the students really step up to the plate! Last year was my first time implementing Readers' Workshop, and I noticed that my students didn't have as many "sit spots" or comfortable reading areas around my classroom. I would love to add bean bag chairs and a buddy bench to my classroom set up so that students have more seating options. My project title is based on a Dr. Seuss quote (he is one of our favorites in kindergarten): "You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book."
