By giving students the chance to read literature of their choice, we help them become better readers. Offering diverse literature helps students see themselves in the stories and learn about the realities of others. Not only will these books help them become better readers, but better citizens of the world. In my class, students are required to read 1000 pages per semester. I find this is much easier on them if they can relate to a book. This is especially true for my reluctant readers. I believe engaging them in literature that they relate to will greatly increase the chances that they will complete this reading and therefore become better readers.
